'Pakes' Surname page (continued)

My Father, educated at Luton Grammar School, followed his father into the millinery trade in Luton until 1969, when the economic climate forced him to seek alternative employment. Moving to Suffolk, my parents became Publicans at The Crown Inn in the village of Snape, near Saxmundham, which they made their home for the next 19 years. Later they moved to The Oyster Inn at Butley, a few miles away, before a stroke forced my father into retirement.

My Father died on 21 December 1995 after a rapid decline in health. He is now at peace in the Garden of Rest at Attleborough Church in Suffolk. His death came at a time when I was working in Abu Dhabi, preparing for a family Christmas. The children had already arrived for the Christmas holidays from their schools in the UK when I was told of his death. Naturally I flew home as soon as I could, to be with Mother during this very difficult time.

I think my Father's death was the 'seal of commitment' I required to spur me on with this Study. My father, the Patriot, the Commando, the Rugby Player, the Milliner and the Publican was very interested when I first mentioned what I was doing, but regretfully his contribution was minimal. So I carry on, because I know he would have fully endorsed this Study, and also because I thoroughly enjoy doing it.
