Born 8 May 1949, in The Chase Nursing Home, Stopsley, Luton, Bedfordshire. First child of Stuart Arthur John Pakes and Louisa Ellen Southey. Resided until 1960 at 274 Park Street in Luton. Attended Tennyson Road County Primary School from 1954 - 60. Passed 11+ exam and went to Dunstable Grammar School (1960-67). Moved with family to 9 Brightwell Avenue, Totternhoe in Bedfordshire in 1960 before leaving home and moving to London in 1968.
Joined the Foreign Office in 1967, Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1968. Served abroad: Aden (1971-3), Anguilla (1973), Reykjavik (1973-6), East Berlin (1976-7), Madrid (1981-4), Cairo (1984-7), Accra (1990-3), Abu Dhabi (1994-8) and Islamabad (1998 - 2001).
Currently living in Northampton and working near Milton Keynes.
